ERC Project

Project Title:

Revitalization of historic African American Corridor & surrounding neighborhoods

Host Community or Region:

Florida

Host Organization:

City of Fort Lauderdale, FL
Revitalization of Fort Lauderdale’s historic African American corridor is a priority for the City Commission, after decades of discrimination contributed to the area’s downturn from a thriving African American arts and entertainment district to an enterprise zone. With high unemployment and the lowest educational attainment levels in the county, the Fort Lauderdale Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) was created to address blight in the area, resulting in significant investment, capital improvements, and new construction to spur business development and incentivize local hiring, but it is sunsetting in 2025 per state mandate. Prioritizing programmatic enhancements that strengthen local businesses and build generational wealth, the ERC Fellow will ensure economic development programs are designed and implemented to measurably benefit the local community, evaluate programmatic outcomes, and provide policy recommendations to scale these efforts. This initiative will revitalize the African American corridor by strengthening local businesses and fostering policies to support generational wealth and equitable economic development.
